Die Stadt ist heutzutage Bühne für eine Vielzahl von Kämpfen und Konflikten.

Die Kämpfe sowie die beteiligten AkteurInnen sind vielseitig: Teile der Stadtbevölkerung werden in ”ghettoartige” Wohngebiete gepresst, andere ziehen sich in umzäunte Enklaven in der Vorstadt zurück und die ”kreative” Klasse nimmt die sanierten Stadtzentren unter Beschlag. Der Polizei kommt in steigendem Maße die Aufgabe zu, diese Auftrennung der Städte zu sichern. Die Stadt entwickelt sich immer mehr zu einer Kampfzone, wobei unser Ziel eine Rückeroberung des Raumes ist, welcher sich durch Grenzen, Mauern und Zäune, Profitdenken und Diskriminierung auszeichnet. Dieser Kampf muss auf verschiedenen Ebenen ausgetragen werden: Theoretische Beiträge, politische Statements sowie ein breites Spektrum sozialer, kultureller und künstlerischer Gegenreaktionen sind einige der notwendigen Aktionen. Gleichzeitig wollen wir ”unsere” eigenen Vorstellungen zum Thema Stadt herausfordern.

Wir wenden uns an BürgerInnen, AktivistInnen, KünstlerInnen, Intelektuelle und GraffitimalerInnen. Wir wenden uns an alle, die die Stadt täglich benutzen und rufen dazu auf, gemeinsam daran zu arbeiten, die Stadt zurück zu erobern: Let´s undo the City!

Unter der Überschrift Undoing the City organisieren wir ein ”Festival” im Zeitraum vom 7. bis 10. Mai in Kopenhagen. Ausgangspunkt des ”Festivals” sind eine Vielzahl heterogener Projekte, welche die aktuell stattfindende ”Städteentwicklung” in Europa in Frage stellen. Mit Hilfe von Workshops, Diskussionsrunden, Filmvorführungen, Stadtwanderungen, Kanalrundfahrten, Festen, Paraden sowie Aktionen versuchen wir die Stadt herauszufordern: Let´s undo the City!

Undoing the City fokussiert auf existierende Konflikte welche sich im weitesten Sinne in der Stadt abspielen. Das Ziel des ”Festivals” ist, die Stadt als eine Plattform zu installieren, welche Platz für verschiedene Aktivitäten schafft, welche die existierenden Städte herausfordert sowie mit den selben experimentiert. Wir verstehen das ”Festival” als eine Möglichkeit sich den ”aktuellen” Städten gegenüber kritisch zu verhalten: Das Recht auf die Stadt, ist das Recht die Stadt zu verändern.
Um die verschiedenen Kämpfe zu ”vereinen”, und gleichzeitig die Möglichkeit zu schaffen auf konkrete Probleme und Kämpfe zu fokussieren, arbeiten wir mit vier verschiedenen thematischen Blöcken. Die vier Blöcke überschneiden sich laufend, schaffen jedoch gleichzeitig die Möglichkeit in verschiedene Richtungen im Kern des globalen Kapitalismus – den Metropolen – zu intervenieren.

Gentrifizierung

Im Laufe von Stadtsanierungen, werden dessen Bewohner ausgetauscht. Dieser Prozess, welcher oft mit dem Begriff ”Gentrifizierung” bezeichnet wird, inkludiert und exkludiert verschiedene Bevölkerungsgruppen. Wer wird inkludiert und wer ausgeschlossen? Wie funktioniert ”Gentrifizierung” und wo und wie bietet sich die Möglichkeit progressiv in diesen Prozess einzugreifen? Wer schafft den ”Wert”, wodurch gewisse Satdtteile für gewisse Leute attraktiv gemacht werden? Und wie können diese Stadtteile sich einer Vereinnahmung entgegenstellen?

Freie Räume

Die bereits erkämpften Freiräume, selbstverwalteten ”Zonen” in den verschiedenen europäischen Städten sehen sich zunehmendem Druck ausgesetzt. Soziale Zentren (centri sociali) in Italien, Stadtgärten in Deutschland, Besetzte Häuser, Christiania – wie können diese verschiedenen Versuche einer alternativen Städtekultur weiterentwickelt und zu einer reellen Alternative gemacht werden? Undoing the City lädt eine Vielzahl von Gruppen ein, welche bereits aktiv und konkret in diese Richtung arbeiten.

Gegen die Wand

Der urbane Raum ist in zunehmendem Maße durch Trennungen und Unterscheidungen gekennzeichnet. Vieles deutet darauf hin, dass die klassische Trennungslinie, welche zwischen verschiedenen ”Klassen” gezogen wird, durch eine Trennungslinie, welche entlang der Ethnizität gezogen wird ergänzt wird. Diese Trennungslinie zieht sich konkret z.B. entlang dem diskriminierenden Auftreten der Polizei, oder einer Einteilung zwischen Schulen mit und ohne ”Ausländern” (so genannten ”Ausländern” 2. und 3. Generation). In Kopenhagen zieht sich eine Grenze zwischen benachbarten Straßenecken in ”Nørrebro” – Das gefährliche ”Blågardspalds” befindet sich nur einige hundert Meter entfernt von der trendigen ”Elmegade”. Wir versuchen eine Vielzahl von Personen und Gruppen zu sammeln, welche aktiv denken und handeln – welche konkret in Bezug auf die neue urbane Segregation reagieren. Ein Kampf gegen Rassismus und sozialen Ausschluss. Kampf um das Recht auf Asyl – das Recht auf Asyl ist auch Recht auf die Stadt. Kampf für ein Recht auf Rechte.

Das Recht auf die Stadt.

Das Recht auf die Stadt bezieht sich auf den Wunsch nach einer ”anderen” Stadt. Das Recht auf die Stadt bedeutet die Möglichkeit aktive MitgestalterInnen unserer Städte zu sein und nicht nur passive VerbraucherInnen und ArbeiterInnen. Im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte hat eine neoliberale Stadtplanung zunehmende Teile unserer Städte ”privatisiert”. Der Kampf um eine Rückeroberung des öffentlichen Raumes setzt sich aus verschieden Strategien zusammen, unter anderem auch einer Restrukturierung der ökonomischen Verhältnisse. Wir müssen die ökonomischen Verhältnisse zurückerobern und neu denken. Wie soll Wohnen organisiert und gestaltet werden? Was erwarten wir von unserem Stadtteil? Wie wollen wir die Stadt ”organisieren”? Was wollen wir ”produzieren”? Dabei denken wir nicht an ”kritische” VerbraucherInnen, sondern wünschen vielmehr ein Feld zu öffnen: Kooperationen, Selbstverwaltung und Besetzungen.

Cities today are scene for a long series of conflicts between different society groups.
It’s a battle going on between those who are forced out into ghettolike districts, those who retreat to gated communities in the suburbs, the creative class in the redeveloped city centres, and the police who increasingly are forced to ensure these separations. The city and its space are more and more becoming battle zones – battle zones which call for a re-conquest of the city space against fences, profit and discrimination. It is a battle to be fought with theoretical inputs, political statements and with the entire spectrum of social, cultural and artistic forms of anti-power. We want to challenge both the capitals, the states, the city governments and the creative class’s ideas of the city. And we want to challenge our own idea of the city.
Let’s undo the city.

We invite citizens, activists, artists, intellectuals and graffiti people. We invite all those who use the city space and who have a wish to make the city a common space to participate in Undoing the City.

The festival is taking place in Copenhagen, 2009 May 7-10 under the name of Undoing the City. Workshops, debates, film-screenings, city walks, canal tours, parades, actions and alike will question our use of the city. Let’s undo the city.

Undoing the City focuses on a wide variety of topics which are linked to urban issues, discuss the existing Copenhagen and open up for new, alternative ideas. It is the purpose of this festival to create interest for the various spaces of the city – to see the city as a platform for a series of activities, which both challenge, investigate and experiment with the existing confines of the city. This festival is meant to be critical on the processes that shape our cities today. Through concrete action, happenings and doings the city should be changed, undone in order that we, the people living and breathing in it, actually influence its development.
The right for the city is the right to change it. Undoing the city focuses on four basic social and politcal struggles, which both are meant to be receptive to the myriads of battles, conflicts and possibilities going on in our metropols and which simultaneously narrow and summarize our actions.

GENTRIFICATION
The redeveloping of cities results undoubtedly in a re-organizing of its inhabitants. This proces is also known as gentrification. Who is included, who excluded? How is this process, which often is taken for given, going on and what are our possibilities for intervening progressively in it? Who is responsible for ascribing value and hype to some city districts and making them more attractive to live in than some of the adjacent districts?

FREE SPACES
The existing, self-administered zones in today’s Europe are scattered and under pressure. We talk about places like the social centres in Italy, urban gardens in Germany, squatted houses, Christiania. How can these attempts to create alternative city-life-cultures be developed and connected to spaces based on the right to participation, which actually include different groups? Undoing the City invides all kinds of groups, those who already fight against these precarious positions as well as all those, who are curious to work with different perspectives on the re-organization of the urban context.

AGAINST THE WALL
Urban spaces today are often characterized by separation. It is not only a class separation, but also a separation of ”ethnicities”, often expressed through the police’s aggressive behaviour and the division in ”black” and ”white” schools. It is to be found where dangerous Blågårds Place and hip Elm Street meet. We would like to gather a lot of people who want to act in response to the problems caused by this new urban segregation – the fight against racism and social exclusion. The fight for the right for asylum – the right for asylum is also the right to the city.

RIGHT TO THE CITY
The right to the city comes from the wish to have another city. It means that all of us should have the right to participate actively instead of being passive workers and consumers. The neoliberal society order has increased the privatization of public space and diminished its expansion possibilities. It is right here this battle has to be fought. This battle needs different strategies, as for example the re-organization of economic conditions.
People need to get the right back to influence decisions on consumption in the cities.
We need to get influence on how we want to live, how our city is organized and what products there are being produced.
It is our vision to go beyond the political consumer and to experiment with cooperatives, self-supply and squatting.
